Transfer Admissions Information ruler

The Law Center reviews transfer applications for both Spring and Fall semester admission.  Transfer applicants, who have completed only one year at an ABA-accredited law school, are admitted to the second year class on a space available basis.  Applicants may only apply if, by the time they matriculate, they will have taken only two semesters worth of classes.  In rare circumstances, applicants who have completed 3 part-time semesters by the time they will matriculate, may apply.

Competitive candidates are typically in the top 15% of their current law school class with an A-/B+ average.

Transfer applicants are considered for either the Full-time or Part-time Division (or both).  Georgetown Law will accept for transfer a maximum of 30 semester hours earned at a student's previous institution (the number of semester hours earned by our first-year day students).  Credit is not usually granted for law school courses beyond the first year.

Application Requirements

Transfer applicants must submit all of the following materials:

  • Completed application form.  Please check the appropriate boxes on the front of the application.
  • Non-refundable $80 application fee.
  • Current law school transcript (through Summer term for Spring entry or through Spring term for Fall entry).
  • Georgetown Law JD Transfer Certification Form (form not yet available).  Note:  This form must be sent directly to Georgetown Law, not through LSDAS.
  • Recommendation from a law school faculty member.
  • Personal statement which should include the reasons for requesting the transfer.
  • Resume.
  • LSDAS Report (see below).

All applicants must register with LSDAS.  Georgetown Law will not accept copies of LSDAS reports from the applicant's current law school.  Once an applicant registers with LSDAS and submits an application (either through LSAC or a mailed paper application) the Admissions Office will automatically request a copy of the applicant's LSDAS report.

Applicants may send their letter(s) of recommendation and transcripts either through LSDAS or directly to the Georgetown Law Admissions Office.

Early Action

If the Law Center receives your completed application by March 16, 2009, your admissions decision will be mailed to you by early May.  To be eligible for the Early Action Program, the Law Center must receive your complete first semester, first-year grades from your law school.  Early Action acceptances are not binding on the applicants.

Early Action applicants apply for admission with one semester's worth of grades, but must have completed two semesters by the time they matriculate.

Regular Decision

Regular Decision admissions decisions are generally not made before July.  All files are reviewed on a rolling basis, therefore, it is encouraged that applicants complete their files as quickly as possible.  To be eligible for the Regular Decision Program, Georgetown Law must receive complete first and second semester, first-year grades from your law school.  Although the deadline is June 15, applicants are encouraged to apply by June 1.
