Visiting at Georgetown Law

Admissions Information for Visitors

Students in their final year of studies who are in good standing at an accredited law school in the United States may apply as visiting non-degree students for no more than one academic year.  Visiting students will earn credit for transfer to their degree-granting institution.

Georgetown Law reviews visiting student applications for both Spring and Fall semester admission. Visiting applicants are considered for either the Full-time or the Part-time Division.

An application to attend Georgetown Law as a visiting student will not be considered unless the applicant’s Dean authorizes the student’s attendance and agrees to transfer the credits earned at Georgetown Law. All applicants must be eligible to register at their degree-granting institution for the semester in which they wish to visit Georgetown Law. In addition, it is strongly preferred that students be at least 21 years of age when they visit, however, we will consider applications from students under 21.

Georgetown Law’s ability to accommodate visiting students is limited, and admission is granted on a competitive, space-available basis.

Note: Visiting students may not apply to transfer to Georgetown.

Foreign Educated Visitors

Georgetown Law may also accept a small number of qualified applicants who are currently enrolled in a law degree program outside the United States, as full-time visitors to Georgetown Law for no more than one academic year. To be eligible for admission to this program, foreign students must ordinarily have completed at least three years of an undergraduate or graduate law degree program, though we may consider applications from highly qualified applicants with 2 years of law study, if that study is in a common law system.

For international students who are not native speakers of English, a TOEFL score report must be submitted together with the rest of the application materials listed above. The minimum TOEFL score required for admission is 250 (at least 25 points in each section) on the computer-based test, 100 (at least 25 points in each section) on the internet-based test, or 600 (at least 60 points in each section) on the paper test. No LSAT score or LSDAS Report is required from international visitor applicants. However, applicants who do not wish to register with LSDAS must submit a paper application, rather than applying online.

Applications will not be considered unless the applicant’s Dean approves the applicant’s plans to visit at Georgetown Law.

Timeline

September 25, 2008 - Georgetown begins accepting applications for Spring 2009

October 31, 2008 - Visitor Deadline for Spring 2009

January 1, 2009 - Fall 2009 application becomes available

February 2, 2009 - Georgetown begins accepting applications for Fall 2009

June 15 - Visitor Deadline for Fall 2009

Application Requirements

Visiting applicants must submit all of the following materials:

  • Completed JD application form. (US and International Visitor Applicants should complete the JD Application Form). Please check the appropriate boxes on the front of the application.
  • Non-refundable $80 application fee.
  • Current law school transcript (through Summer term for Spring entry or through Spring term for Fall entry).
  • Personal statement, which should include the reasons for requesting admission as a visiting student and an indication of the applicant’s intended subject areas of study.
  • Resume.

 

  • U.S. Students only: Letter from the applicant’s degree granting institution authorizing the applicant’s attendance for either one semester or full year and agreeing to transfer the credits earned at Georgetown Law.

 

  • International Students Only: Letter from the applicant’s degree granting institution stating that the applicant is a student in good standing, and authorizing the applicant’s attendance for either one semester or full year at Georgetown Law.
  • International Students Only: If you are not a native speaker of English, a TOEFL score report from a test taken within the past two years.

 

Visitor FAQs
May visiting students apply to transfer to Georgetown Law? No.  Visiting students may not apply to transfer to Georgetown Law. The Visiting Student Program is designed for law students in their final year of law school who are interested in taking courses not offered at their home law school.
May visiting students participate in recruitment activities at Georgetown Law? Visiting students are not eligible to participate in recruitment activities unless they will not participate in such activities at their home institution.
Must international visiting applicants register with LSDAS? No.  However, international visiting applicants who do not wish to register with LSDAS must submit a paper application, rather than applying online.
